Duleep Trophy semifinals got off to an exciting start on Sunday, August 30, with South Zone producing an impressive bowling performance to dismiss North Zone for just 195 runs at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (BCCI CoE). Vidhwath Kaverappa led the attack with a four-wicket haul, while Tanay Thyagarajan and MD Nidheesh picked up two wickets each to keep North Zone under constant pressure.
In the other Duleep Trophy semifinal, East Zone also enjoyed a productive day with the ball after restricting Central Zone to 266 in the first innings. Rinku Singh top-scored for Central with a determined 60, but East Zone’s bowlers worked together effectively to prevent their opponents from posting a bigger total.
With both semifinals beginning on the same day, the Duleep Trophy once again provided a platform for domestic cricket’s leading performers to make an impression.
Duleep Trophy: South Zone Bowling Attack Keeps North Zone Under Pressure
North Zone won the toss and decided to bat first, following the same approach they had taken in their quarterfinal against West Zone. However, their decision did not produce the desired result as South Zone’s bowlers maintained disciplined lines and regularly picked up wickets.
Qamran Iqbal was the standout batter for North Zone, scoring a valuable 76. His innings was the main source of stability for the team, but he did not receive enough support from the rest of the batting order.
Ayush Doseja made a positive start at No. 3 and struck five boundaries during his 23-run innings. However, his stay at the crease ended when he was dismissed by Kavuri Saiteja.
North Zone then suffered another setback as Ayush Badoni and Abdul Samad departed in quick succession. Their dismissals left North Zone struggling at 95 for four during the opening session.
The early wickets meant North Zone needed a substantial partnership to rebuild their innings. Captain Kanhaiya Wadhawan stepped up alongside Iqbal and helped steady the innings.
Kanhaiya Wadhawan and Qamran Iqbal Build North Zone’s Best Partnership
Kanhaiya Wadhawan played an important supporting role and scored 35 runs. His partnership with Qamran Iqbal became the best stand of the North Zone innings, adding 66 runs.
For a period, the partnership appeared to have given North Zone a chance of reaching a competitive first-innings total.
However, South Zone continued to apply pressure. Tanay Thyagarajan eventually broke the partnership by bowling Wadhawan, leaving Iqbal with the lower order around him.
Iqbal continued fighting and remained the key figure in North Zone’s attempt to build a respectable score. His 76 was easily the highest individual score of the innings.
But once the South Zone bowlers broke through the middle order, North Zone’s resistance faded rapidly.
Vidhwath Kaverappa Runs Through North Zone’s Lower Order
Vidhwath Kaverappa emerged as the star bowler for South Zone. After an expensive first spell, he returned strongly and made a major impact during the closing stages of North Zone’s innings.
Kaverappa dismissed the crucial Qamran Iqbal and then ran through the lower order. His four-wicket haul played a central role in South Zone bowling North Zone out for 195.
North Zone lost their final five wickets for only 21 runs, turning what could have been a competitive total into a modest one.
Kaverappa finished with four wickets for 66 runs, while Tanay Thyagarajan claimed two for 31. MD Nidheesh also contributed with two wickets as South Zone completed an impressive bowling effort.
The collapse also meant there was no repeat of the lower-order rescue act that had helped North Zone in their previous match.
Anshul Kamboj, who had played an important role in the previous game, could not produce a similar recovery this time.
South Zone Lose Two Wickets Before Stumps
Although South Zone dominated most of the day with the ball, North Zone managed to fight back before the close of play.
Anshul Kamboj and Guroor Brar picked up one wicket each as North Zone made early inroads into the South Zone innings.
However, N. Jagadeesan remained unbeaten on 34 and helped South Zone finish the day in a strong position.
At the end of the opening day, South Zone reached 40 for two, leaving them 155 runs behind North Zone’s first-innings total with plenty of cricket still remaining.

Duleep Trophy Semifinal: East Zone Bowlers Restrict Central Zone to 266
The second Duleep Trophy semifinal also produced an entertaining opening day, with East Zone putting together a strong bowling display against Central Zone.
East Zone won the toss and elected to bowl first. Their bowlers justified the decision by consistently picking up wickets and restricting Central Zone to 266 in their first innings.
Rinku Singh was the standout batter for Central Zone, scoring 60 from 88 balls. He struck eight boundaries during his determined innings and played an important role in preventing Central from collapsing completely.
However, East Zone maintained pressure throughout the innings and did not allow Central Zone’s batters to settle for long periods.

Central Zone Lose Early Wickets
Abhijit Sarkar gave East Zone the perfect start with the ball. He dismissed Aman Mokhade and Kunal Chandela, finishing with three wickets for 38 runs.
Central Zone’s problems increased when captain Rajat Patidar was dismissed LBW by Mukesh Kumar. Patidar managed only 12 runs, and his departure left Central Zone at 66 for three.
East Zone continued to control the contest as wickets kept falling.
The score soon moved to 125 for five after Aryan Juyal was trapped LBW by Mukesh Kumar. Juyal had scored 46 and looked capable of making a bigger contribution, but Mukesh’s dismissal ended another important partnership.
Mukesh Kumar eventually finished with three wickets for 56 runs, matching Sarkar’s three-wicket haul.
Rinku Singh Provides Central Zone With Crucial Resistance
With Central Zone struggling at 125 for five, Rinku Singh took responsibility for guiding the lower middle order.
The left-hander played with composure and attacked whenever opportunities came his way. His 60-run innings included eight boundaries and became the most important contribution of Central Zone’s first innings.
Rinku also shared a valuable 55-run partnership with Harsh Dubey.
That stand helped Central Zone move away from a difficult position and gave the team hope of reaching a more competitive total.
However, East Zone eventually broke through again and prevented Central Zone from finishing with a much larger score.
Yash Thakur Adds Late Runs for Central Zone
Central Zone’s final-wicket pair of Yash Thakur and Arshad Khan provided some late resistance.
Arshad Khan faced nine deliveries and scored just one run, but Yash Thakur played a more attacking role. He struck six boundaries during his unbeaten 30 from only 26 balls.
Thakur’s late hitting gave Central Zone’s total an extra boost and helped them reach 266.
Without the contributions from Rinku Singh, Harsh Dubey and the final-wicket pair, Central Zone could have been dismissed for a considerably lower score.
East Zone, meanwhile, could be pleased with a collective bowling performance that kept Central Zone under control.
